Lee Theatre

1925, Institutional

99 Percival Street

Lee Theatre in Causeway Bay was undoubtedly the stage for Hong Kong people. The Hysan Lee family built the theatre in 1925 as a performing venue for Cantonese opera. Throughout the years, Lee Theatre had been the cradle of dreams and symbol of stardom where concerts, pageants, Cantonese operas, western operas and movies were staged. It became part of the collective memory of Hong Kong people. The design of Lee Theatre was a blend of Chinese and western architectural styles. Inside the theatre, there were sculptures of golden dragon and phoenix, coupled with a couplet in front of the stage and an impressive dome. In contrast, its exterior was full of features reflecting Art Deco style, including the granite façade composed by minimal fine lines creating layers and rich visual impact. Lee Theatre was demolished in 1991 and reconstructed into a commercial centre.
