In the late twentieth century, a few Asian cities were adamant to solve the situation of rapidly growing air traffic. Subsequent to the completion of Singapore Changi Airport (1990), Kansai International Airport in Japan (1994) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia (1998), Hong Kong International Airport was completed in 1998. Behind each major city airport project are teams that represent the crème de la crème of design and construction, aspiring to excel in this international race and attain the desired results of contributing to the development of local economy.

British architect Norman Foster designed Hong Kong International Airport. Based on his strategy for Stansted Airport in north London, he adopted simplicity in the design to strengthen users’ sense of direction. As Hong Kong International Airport is larger in scale, Norman Foster placed check-in hall, arrival hall and staff unit on three different levels, creating an effective and iconic transportation hub.
