HKSKH St. Mary's Church

1937, Religious

2A Tai Hang Road

HKSKH St. Mary's Church is located at the junction of Tung Lo Wan Road and Eastern Hospital Road on Hong Kong Island. The Christian church catches the attention of passersby from afar with its blend of Chinese and western architectural features. Designed by architect Chau & Lee in 1937, the church was constructed in Chinese Renaissance style, which was popular in the 1930s. The unique structure is situated on a porch, with a grand flight of steps connecting to its Chinese classical railings. The main door is decorated with red columns and green glazed Chinese tiles. The exterior wall constructed in red bricks is also topped with green glazed Chinese tiles, which form a stepped roof ascending to the apex. There is a large white cross at the centre of the façade. The interior of the church is also ornamented with traditional Chinese patterns as its main feature.
