Architect: Johannes Prip-Moller

Tao Fung Shan, The Mountain of the Way Wind, a name one might associate more with Buddhist or Taoist meditation. Yet it is actually an protestant architectural compound in Shatin established by Dr Karl Ludvig Reichelt, a Norwegian priest in 1930 . The complex was designed by Danish architect Johannes Prip-Möller. It “borrowed” traditional Chinese architectural features including pavilions, arches, tile roofs, pai lou and Chinese garden in order to attract local Chinese. Tao Fung Shan includes a chapel, library, office, gallery and garden. From various architectural language to symbols and mofit, the Missionary is thoroughly assimilated in Chinese Renaissance architecture style popular in the 1930s to demonstrate a combination of Chinese and Western cultures. Tao Fung Shan Missionary is now one of the very few well preserved Chinese Renaissance architecture in Hong Kong. The building was declared Grade II Historic Building.
