St.Teresa's Church

1932, Religious

258 Prince Edward Road

Architect: Fr. Adalbert Gresnigt O.S.B

European Medieval Architecture in Hong Kong? Yes, indeed. Belgium architect Van Wylick developed Princes Edward Road West as a community with European houses in 1930s, thereby derives the name Belfran Road. Protected by Fátima Virgin Mary and St. Teresa of Lisieux, the Kowloon St Teresa’s Church built in 1932 is the centre of this community, serving mainly the Catholic Portuguese and other European people in North Kowloon then. The church is laid out as a Latin Cross; its structure adopts East Roman columns and round arches; its façade and Belfry are in Northern Renaissance style; its roof is made of Byzantine pointed octagonal top. It architecture differs from customary English or French style churches, thus act as an important heritage which testifies the distinctive culture of pre-war communities of European communities of Hong Kong.
