Jamia Mosque

1915, Religious

30 Shelley Street

Subsequent to British occupation, Islam merchants, sailors, soldiers and police forces flocked to Hong Kong and most of them lived in Central. Following the increase in Muslim population, the Government alloted a piece of land on Shelley Street for Muslim worshippers in 1849. After extension in 1870 and reconstruction in 1915, the original structure has transformed into the beautiful Jamia Mosque of today.

The building is a typical Islamic architecture with mosque features including arched main doors, arched windows, a dome, geometric figures and a minaret at the centreline of the mosque, which is rarely seen in mosques. Nowadays Muslims no longer live in Central in clusters and the Mosque is surrounded by modern, high-rise buildings. Nonetheless the oldest mosque in Hong Kong continues to be a living witness of the development of Central.
