Western Market, Sheung Wan

1906, Commercial

323 Des Voeux Road Central

Western Market today was originally the North Block of the old Western Market located at the junction of Des Voeux Road West and Morrison Street. Built in 1906, Western Market is a two-storey building with granite base, exterior walls constructed in red and white bricks and a dome. The British Edwardian architecture was designed by the then Public Works Department. The building became vacant in 1989 and a declared monument in 1990. In 1991, it was handed to Land Development Corporation for the reconstruction of Wing On Street in Central. The old market was renovated, where two floors were added between the two original floors, turning the structure into a four-storey building. Merchants selling cloths were relocated to the second floor. The top floor became a Chinese restaurant. Shops selling products related to local culture were located on the ground floor, turning the site into a new cultural landmark in the city.
