Subsequent to Tai Ping Shan’s plague outbreak in Sheung Wan in 1894, experts were dispatched by the British Goverenment to Hong Kong in 1906 to establish a bacteriological laboratory. The three-storey architecture design applied contrasting red bricks and white classical columns. Integrating decorative railings with colourful ceramic floor tiles, as well as Chinese window grilles with gable resembling laboratory flasks, the structure fully displays the essence of Edwardian architectural style, which was popular at the time. In 1996, a group of doctors transferred the site into a museum of medical sciences, to introduce the study of medicine and bacteriology in Hong Kong. It is not only the pioneer of local non-profit organisations as well as government-owned historic building that welcomes public access, but also the figurehead of medical sciences development of the city.
